Welp, engine trouble. Thank goodness for warranties.

The Pentastar in my Wrangler is ticking. Yep, a mechanic friend of mine confirmed that it is indeed the infamous Pentastar tick/ #2 cylinder misfire. I'm probably going to get a new cylinder head from the dealer in the next few weeks. On-road review of my Wrangler coming soon as in later tonight or tomorrow. (Spoiler: I still love my car!)

Have a TJ for your time:

I wish the Pentastar had the reliability of those 2001.5-2006 AMC straight-6s.

They should have kept the straight-6 in production for the Wrangler, instead of going to the Pentashit.

Don't forget that they went to the 3.8L minivan boat anchor before going to the Pentashit.

I intentionally forgot that. And all this Jeep talk is making me wish I had the money to buy my friend's built TJ.

whoa there, what's wrong with the Pentastar? I've never heard of any reliability issues, and it makes good power with good mileage, much better than the engines it replaced.

Do it! I wanted a TJ but all the ones I found either didn't have the 4.0L or were rusted out.

I'd have to figure out a way to get rid of my Mazda to do it.

It isn't a hipster straight 6 with questionable electronics.

I don't know that I'd call it "hipster", it's a workhorse and better than the engine that replaced it, it just excels in different areas than the Pentastar.

In what areas does it excel?

The decision had something to do with the torque curve. The I-6 was peaky, the V-6 had a broader curve that was better suited for towing and other Jeep stuff.

Better low end power, reliable (yet to be proven with the Pentastar), probably much less sensitive to the quality of gas/oil, simpler to maintain. The Pentastar hasn't been run to 250K, blown a radiator hose, then driven back to town/fixed/continued to dd yet like the 4.0 has. I also don't expect it to because it has to be more finicky to meet emissions and CAFE regs. But the Pentastar made the Wrangler much quicker, while also giving it much better economy. My friend gets 25 highway with his, normal 70-80 highway too. The 4.0 was a solid, simple, engine that performed well at what it was used for. It would probably still be under the hoods of jeeps for years to come if not for emissions standards.
